My name is Justina Meixner. For years and years a horse was always at the top of my Christmas and Birthday list. I finally got my first horse, Comanche when I was 12 years old and "Horse Stuff" became the #1 item on my list. He was supposed to be a 3 year old gelding, we found out months later that he was closer to 2 and was still a stallion. He was a skinny gray Appaloosa, that to most people was unattractive, but to me he was the most beautiful horse I had ever seen. He was with me until he died at age 31. I've also owned several other horses in my lifetime. I currently have a 33 year old mare that I bought as a 2 year old in addition to my other 2 full size horses and 4 minis.

My first rescue horse from Blaze's was a Tennessee Walker they named Gussie. Shortly after she arrived, a local TV station interviewed Natalee about Blazes. During the interview as Natalee stood by a horse pen, she was constantly pestered by a gorgeous, but painfully thin chestnut horse (Gussie). I told myself "I want that horse!" Shortly afterwards I talked to Natalee about fostering her. She was super skinny when they got her but I knew she'd turn into a beautiful horse with some feed and love. I picked her up in November 2014 and became a "foster failure" by spring 2015 when I adopted her. I renamed her Phyre because her light colored mane reminded me of flames. I also have two mini horses that I adopted in 2015 from Blaze's, Ironman and Captain America, which I've renamed Cutie and Carl. I also have two Labs, and a Greyhound/Beagle mix and two cats. Of those 5, 4 were rescues of some sort.

I have been a volunteer at Blaze's since 2014. I enjoy helping with cleanup day, vet day, the gelding clinics, the Trainer Challenge and whatever else they need me to do. After being around the Cross family and the board members and other volunteers, I knew I wanted to be a bigger part of this organization. They really made me feel like part of the family, so when they asked me to become a board member I was honored that they chose me. I'm excited about what's ahead for Blaze's and want to be there with them to help rescue horses from suffering and neglect. I want others to experience the awesome feeling of adopting and bringing a horse out of that kind of life into a happy, healthy one with someone to love and care for them.
